Compare at a glance
| Chemistry | Cell voltage | Weight | Rechargeable | Typical devices |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Li-Ion | 3.6–3.7V | Lightest | Yes | Laptops, phones, power tools |
| Li-Polymer | 3.7–3.85V | Lightest | Yes | Phones, tablets, laptops, wearables |
| AGM (Sealed Lead) | 2V | Heaviest | Yes | UPS, alarms, emergency lighting |
| Ni-MH | 1.2V | Medium | Yes | Cordless phones, medical |
| Ni-Cd | 1.2V | Medium | Yes | Older tools, radios, exit signs |
Do not swap chemistries unless your device maker approves it: chargers are built for one chemistry.

Chemistry questions
Can I replace Ni-Cd with Ni-MH?
Only when your device or charger maker says it is supported. The two have the same 1.2V cell voltage but charge differently, so check the charger first.
What is the difference between AGM and SLA?
AGM (absorbed glass mat) is a type of sealed lead acid (SLA) battery. Match the voltage, capacity, size and terminal type of your current battery.
Are 18650 cells the same as Li-Ion batteries?
An 18650 is a cylindrical lithium-ion cell, 18 mm wide and 65 mm long. Many lithium-ion battery packs are built from several of them.
